A 900ml stainless steel lunch box that includes a bamboo lid that doubles as a chopping board!
Black & Blum carefully studied how people carry and prepare their sandwiches. Their research showed that often it can be preferable to carry wet ingredients (like tomatoes) separately, only including them at the point of consumption. So the idea of introducing what would be a mini chopping board within the product design, allowing for food prep on-the-go, was really exciting. This board could also be a platter for presentation, perfect for picnics. This allows the product more imaginative uses, not just exclusively for sandwiches, but other dry goods, like salads and cheese. It takes inspiration from traditional Japanese Bento Boxes, and the material combination of bamboo and steel work well together and ensures the design will age well.

EASY TO CLEAN AND SECURE
The easy-to-clean over-moulded silicone rim allows for soft connection between bamboo and steel, and the silicone strap adds extra security to your lid.
Can the Sandwich Box Large be used in the dishwasher?
You cannot put the stainless steel bowl or bamboo lid in the dishwasher, but the silicone inner tub is dishwasher safe.
Does the Sandwich Box Large leak?
This lunch box is best for dry foods as it is NOT leak proof. If carrying foods that have sauces, it needs to be kept upright to avoid these leaking out.
Are there any specific care instructions for this product?
It’s easy to simply clean the bamboo board and box with either hot soapy water, or a solution of bleach and water (about 1 tblsp of bleach per 4.5L water) will help remove any lingering smells. NEVER leave the bamboo lid soaking as it may cause it to bend, always dry with kitchen roll or a tea towel after washing. If you use your box regularly, you can apply a small amount of food safe oil with a cotton cloth once a month to the bamboo lid. This stops it from cracking, or drying out. Just make sure you remove any excess oil afterwards.
Why did you choose bamboo for the board material?
Bamboo (which is actually a grass, and not wood) grows incredibly quickly and can be harvested easily, which makes it a highly sustainable resource. Bamboo is very dense, holds much less moisture when compared to other wooden boards, and if cared for correctly, is less prone to warping. It also has an inherent natural barricade against bacteria, making it ideal to use with foodstuffs.

‘We launched our first lunch box design in 2010 and this helped inspire and ignite the whole marketplace for food on-the-go. At the time, although the Japanese were using beautiful bento boxes, the West was making do with standard waxy plastic food containers. Today, the market is transformed and far more aware of the eco, health and financial benefits of taking your own food with you. So much so, that we are now seeing a growing trend of people meal prepping and batch cooking. This might be people following a certain diet for health or fitness, trying to live more sustainably or simply saving money. From a design standpoint, we saw this as a great opportunity to create a range of food containers with different volumes and shapes to suit the individual user and food type. The design is simple and minimal; stripped back to the bare essentials to allow it to be competitively priced but remaining truly functional.
